Holidays need not mean extra sleeping and idle hours. Holidays also mean festivals and celebrations. We should celebrate their spirit in full glory. At KiddyPi, celebrations mean fun-learning for the kids!

On 15th August, we had organized the Independence Day Coding Workshops for two age groups of kids.

The theme-based fun-coding activities were designed around our rich heritage and Indian freedom movement. Here is a quick overview of the events:

Independence Day Coding Workshops

Participants shared their ideas on how to solve coding challenges given to them. They learned new methods to solve them. They engaged in practical assignments and built cool apps and programs.

We had a showstopper of a masterpiece in the form of a cute-smart flag hoisting robot. With its perfect maneuvers, it won all hearts.

The workshops were interspersed with entertaining micro-quizzes on general topics and the Indian freedom movement.

The workshop for 8 to 10 years old was divided into two sections – one refresher session for our existing students, and another for a new batch of students.

We also held an app development session for the 10 to 16-year age-group. Participants learned how to create a marble ball gaming app.

Let’s have a closer look at both the workshops:

  • Time slot: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm

Age group: 8 to 10 yrs old

The development platform chosen for the refresher session was virtual Micro: bit (Micro: bit online simulator). Micro: bit is an amazing tool for STEM learning. In Micro: bit, computer chips are used for learning coding concepts, mathematics, and other subjects of science. Learners develop critical analysis, computing and real-life problem-solving skills.

We had tailored the workshop on how to code some of the traditional games of India like dice-roll. At our workshop, participants engaged in coding a dice-roll game with virtual Micro: bit and Blockly programming.

A dice-roll game is very interesting where children can shake the Micro: bit tool and see the digits change from 1 to 6. Children also learned about how to generate random integers. Since it was a virtual Micro: bit workshop, learners executed and tested the program on a browser.

The new batch of students enrolled in the Scratch workshop. They learned about how to code an app that can paint our tricolor.

Scratch is a highly popular block-based programming language. Scratch is ideal for young children to apply their imagination and manifest them into creativity. Learners can implement their knowledge in digital storytelling, game development and animation.

  • Batch 2

Time slot: 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Age group: 10 to 16 yrs old

The evening session was on mobile app development. Students learned to code a marble motion-control game. This is another popular game in India played for thousands of years.

The motion-control gaming app lets you control the motion and direction of marble by tilting your phone. You can navigate the marble around obstacles and put it into a hole. As you successfully do this, you earn a point.

The development platform chosen was the MIT app inventor. Online app development platforms like MIT app inventor have simplified the steps to code mobile apps for different operating systems like iOS and Android. Our programming workshop participants enjoyed the whole learning session. They learned about the in-built orientation sensors of mobile devices that monitor tilt, rotation, swing and shaking movements in devices.

    I-Day Refresher Workshops

Some of our existing students enrolled in the coding workshops. It was an opportunity for them to revise and clear their doubts in these refresher sessions.

Both new and existing students made the most of these learning events. We are going to hold more such events in the coming days with tailored coding challenges, themed on festivals and national holidays.

    Final Thoughts

Programming is an integral part of STEM education. It can also help deepen the cultural awareness and understanding in our kids. This is just a small beginning towards the holistic development of a child. More is coming… stay tuned!
